“The brain appears to possess a special area which we might call poetic memory and which records everything that charms or touches us, that makes our lives beautiful.”—Milan Kundera, from The Unbelievable Lightness of Being. (via acrylicpaints)
“My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomably senseless act. I am at a loss for words how to express my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”—Anne Hathaway in an officially released statement | TMZ
I’ve noticed a lot of posts circling the internet about how to be happy. As someone who deals with depression, I thought I’d take a crack at it. These are my…happy hints?
Exercise when you can and eat cleaner- Okay class, time for a Biology lesson. Exercising releases endorphins. Endorphins pump happy through your body. In conclusion, exercising makes you feel better. I know lazy tends to win, but get in a groove and you’ll begin to enjoy it. Chances are you’ll be happier with the results. Concerning food: If you would please note I did not say diet. Diets suck the happy out, not the fat. Indulge if you want. Just remember fresh homemade food tastes fantastic too (Lots of colors on the plate and you’ll be golden). If you’re worrying about appearances, don’t. Try not to focus so much on what you see in the mirror. Confidence is way healthier and less irritating. Besides, it’s your freaking body so people can back the hell off.
Old and New- Do something you love and then do something you want to love. Example: I bake all the time, it’s relaxing. I recently started painting and drawing. I suck, but I like it! The old and the new mixes things up a bit which might get you out of a rut.
People generally suck- They do. Don’t be surprised when someone ditches you or doesn’t have your back. If you get yourself in a tissy each time, you’ll just stay miserable. There is someone in your life you can count on. I promise. Surround yourself with them and don’t worry about the number. It’s quality over quantity.
Don’t be a victim- Being pissy at the world won’t change anything and bad attitudes drive away good vibes. Send out good mojo. Chances are the universe will return some. If you don’t believe in karma my advice changes to: Don’t be a dick to the rest of the world and people will tolerate you. Maybe even like you.
Accomplish something- When you reach a goal, you feel kick ass. It can be something stupid and meaningless, but it’ll get you in the right state of mind. Take mine for example, my new goal is to touch my toes. It’s still in progress…
One day at a time- Personally, the hardest for me. Try not to focus on something in the future you have absolutely no control over. Take things day by day. It makes some hurdles easier to handle. Others might still be tough, but it’ll just make the victory that much sweeter. You’ll make it through.
It’s okay to have a bad day- As someone, somewhere on the internet so eloquently put, “The sun can’t shine every god damn day.” You’re human. No one is happy 24/7 and if it appears so, they are lying. Or on drugs. Let off some steam in a healthy way. At least try to finish each day on a good note.
Seven is my lucky number so I’m stopping there. However, I will say one more thing. Everyone is different. These work for me most of the time (remember number 7!), so if they don’t work for you, don’t lose hope. You’ll be okay. Being unhappy takes a lot of energy. Almost as much as worrying about happiness. This will probably contradict everything I said above, but don’t try to be happy. Just be.
“Realize you can be happy this moment for no reason. Otherwise, you eternally depend on conditions for happiness. Unconscious of this moment, you remain a victim of circumstances.”—Arthur D. Saftlas (via slychedelic)
